On Sept. 18 we headed north of Lake Louise to take the Icefields Parkway to the Athabaska Glacier.
We stopped at all the viewing points, both official and unofficial. Here is Herbert Lake. The clouds were dramatic that day, and if you look hard you can see a trace of a mountain in this one, they are still playing hide and seek with us:
I can't remember where these next ones were taken, other than along the road. That's the downside of waiting over 6 months to blog about a trip.
I am pretty sure the next photo is of the south-eastern arm of Bow Lake, along the road:
We then stopped and parked to see the rest of Bow Lake. We had to park pretty far out along the road and walk in (it's a popular scenic drive), but there were nice views like this one on the way in:
Bow Lake:
These next two are of Peyto Lake, where we hiked a short snow-covered trail to see the lake and glacier. It was funny seeing the tourists from warmer climates getting up close and personal with the snow, lying in it and rolling around in it alongside the trail. The viewing point was crawling with tourists, many of whom just had to hop over the trail barrier and get a few feet closer to the view, making it hard to get a photo without beaming selfie-takers in the foreground, but I did!
Just an interesting dip in the mountain, further along the parkway:
The skies started opening up a bit more as we got higher in elevation, which was a nice switch from previous days:
Almost at the glacier:
Coming up next, our hike to the edge of the Athabaska glacier.
