Escalante: Spooky slot canyon

After leaving Dry Fork, we passed the entrance to Peekaboo slot canyon.  We had already decided not to do this one due to there being standing water in the canyon, and the need to climb this 12 foot wall to get into it.

At the visitor centre, the ranger had told us "you'll have no problems at all, the water is only waist high."  He was serious.  As we passed the entrance, we could hear a hiker scream, followed by a loud splash ... nope, we decided to hike further down the wash and look for Spooky canyon.

It was a little tricky to find, but here we go ...

This one gets pretty skinny and interesting right away ...

Squeezing already ... we had already taken off our back packs and left them in a little alcove along the way.

Is this ever fun!  We had expected it to just have a couple of areas where you had to squeeze to get through, but the whole 1/3 mile length of the canyon was really narrow in most parts.  There were a lot of other hikers, too, so you often had to tuck yourself into a small alcove and wait for other hikers to clear the narrow sections.

At the end of the canyon, many people crawl up this hole above my head, and then go looking for the end of Peekaboo canyon to do a loop hike.  We weren't going to try that though.

More photos taken on the way out ...

It was so hot on the hike back, and we were running low on water.  This is the wash that the 3 canyons flow into, that we had to trudge along on our endless hike back to the car ...

Once we were out of the canyon, it was still a mile's hike along this road to get back to the car ... but we made it!  This was one of the best hikes ever.

Next up, we will visit the Devil's garden ...
