So are these Azaleas?

These flowers are everywhere in L.A. I'd assumed they were azaleas, but now I'm not certain, I've been checking the internet and there are so many varieties I can't make a match for sure. Whatever they are, they are hanging over the sidewalk all over the place. I can't think of a nicer thing to be decapitated by while walking.

  1. They do look a bit like azaleas, but I´d guess that they´re bougainvillias which grow rampant thoughout Latin America and the Mediterrenean region. I´ve never been to California, but since the climate is similar, I´d imagine that´s what they are. I just love them, and even have one on my terrace but it hasn´t been flowering lately :( So enjoy.

  2. They're rhododendrons, which is a type of azalea. I went to a rhododendron festival in May a year and a half ago with my parents in Vancouver (Burnaby actually), and have lots of pix showing just that plant! They are indeed lovely and spectacular. I'm sure the flower bunches in California are as big as one's head, just like in Vancouver, but here in Toronto they're only a little bigger than a softball.
